SUMMARY - 1ST PART
In Japanese culture, Ki (気 - lit. "energy; breath; spirit") lies at the heart of many traditional beliefs and represents the spiritual energy that connects all living beings to nature; Ki is a fundamental principle that inhabits the ecosystems of the universe in the form of an energy flow. It also constitutes the "inner movement" of the human body and determines its physical abilities. The teaching of martial arts reveals an individual's true strength through the mastery of Ki; this discipline thus improves the vital condition of human beings and provides each of them with a serene mind.
KI ACCORDING TO AKIRA TORIYAMA :
Chōzenshū-Vol.4, p.49
Translation: "Ki - The overall power possessed by each individual, such as Battle Power (戦闘力), Life Force (生命力), etc. Primarily used to indicate Battle Power, it can be said that the stronger a person is, the higher their Ki becomes. Boosted Ki emanates from the body like an aura. Although invisible to the naked eye, experienced warriors can sense it."
Kulilin
Translation: « Release your Ki (気) !!!!! »
Battle Power (Sentōryoku - 戦闘力 / Other name: "Power Level") is the perceptible emanation of a human Ki's Power. Its measurement determines the intensity of an effort in relation to the energy expended.
Vital Energy (Genki – 元気 / 'health'), also known as Life Force (Seimeiryoku - 生命力), corresponds to the fundamental energy residing within all existing forms of life. It encompasses both the concepts of Physical Strength (体力) and Mental Strength (精神力), allowing humans to unleash Battle Power. In other words, Vital Energy is the essential part of Ki responsible for the longevity of natural systems in the universe (humans, animals, plants, planets, stars, etc.). Genki is, without a doubt, the most important aspect of Ki, as it encompasses all the Power an individual possesses, as well as their Will. These two elements complement each other, and it would be inconceivable to reduce Genki to a mere source of motivation without considering the intrinsic strength of the person, incarned body and soul in each of his actions. Its mention in the manga is sometimes expressed by the term 'Seiki' (生気) to describe the energy that comes from living organisms.
After defeating Piccolo, Gokū gives him a Senzu so that he can recover and return to full strength:
Son Gokū
Translation:
"Eat this [...] You'll recover your Vital Energy (元気)."
It is important to note that the energy called "Genki" (元気) is equivalent to "Yuán Qì" (元氣) in Chinese, which refers to the source of all other forms of Qì (氣) within the body. While Qì (or Ki) is a general term for "Vital Energy," Yuán Qì specifically represents the true form of Qì in Tai Chi Chuan, serving as the foundation for sustaining life and health. Its depletion leads to a decline in vitality (in a real-world context).
Akira Toriyama
Translation: "In a battle, the most important thing is the size of the Ki (気) and its mastery. What is called 'Ki' also includes, of course, concepts derived from Mental Strength (Seishin-ryoku - 精神力), such as Health (Genki, 元気), Courage (Yūki, 勇気), and Sobriety (Shōki, 正気). No matter how much one trains Physical Strength, there is a limit to it, and only 'Ki' allows one to surpass that limit. By making his Ki more powerful, I believe Gokū was able to get closer to being the strongest warrior in the universe."
Super Exciting Guide - Story Volume, p.192
Note: The existence of various types of Ki does not mean that all Ki contains different proportions of energy. The Japanese are accustomed to describing Ki with various adjectives, but its multiple characteristics do not change its main role.

Chōzenshū-Vol.4
TOTAL RELEASE OF KI:
A tiny fraction of humans possess a Latent Potential (Senzai Nōryoku - 潜在能力) that lies dormant within them. When a warrior awakens the hidden strength within, their power (Pawā - パワー / 'Power') increases dramatically.
Chōzenshū-Vol.4
Translation: Revealing the Latent Potential
"Appearance: Chapter 265 / Category: Special (特殊) / Characters: Grand Elder, Old Kaiōshin / Description: A technique that brings out the Latent Potential that every individual possesses. In the case of the Grand Elder, it acts as a trigger to awaken this potential, but if there is no dormant power within the person, no change will occur. On the other hand, this technique can simply be used by extending the hand. In the case of the Old Kaiōshin, he is able to bring out people's power beyond their Latent Potential, but the execution requires a specific dance and takes more than 20 hours."
In humans, Physical Strength (Tairyoku - 体力 / translated as 'endurance'), or more simply Stamina (Sutamina – スタミナ), represents the reserve of Vital Energy that allows one to resist fatigue during physical exertion.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT:
In Akira Toriyama's work, when martial artists unleash their Ki or transform, they shift from a "normal state" to a "martial state" by mobilizing the Vital Energy within them. Once this energy — the Ki — is deployed, it flows throughout their bodies and emits a perceptible aura. The inactive power they hold is thus released and ready for use. The individuals can then adjust their Battle Power as needed, increasing it by accumulating their Ki (up to their limits) to perform combat techniques. However, this effort requires them to sacrifice part of their stamina. Learn more
Raditz
Translation: "That one...!! He is capable of concentrating his Battle Power (戦闘力) in one point to amplify it...!!!"
The more enduring a fighter is, the greater their power can grow in amplitude. Through intense training, they develop their Vital Energy and become more robust than before. Some individuals have the ability to increase their power level through transformations that enhance their physical abilities. However, they do not always fully control the state they achieve under these conditions and see their endurance significantly decrease.
Example: Kaiō-ken x20 (20
Son Gokū
Translation:
"I've really lost a lot of power... As expected, the Kaiō-ken x20 was unreasonable..."
Another example: Super Saiyan 3rd grade
/!\ Not to be confused with Super Saiyan 3 /!\
- SUPÂ SAIYAJIN DAI 3 DANKAI - (Super Saiyan 3rd grade): [characters] Goku, Trunks. [description] Muscle development reaches its peak with grade 3, thus ensuring the fighter phenomenal strength. However, this state results in a considerable loss of speed in movements. In addition, the energy consumed to maintain this state is too great (Daizenshū-Vol.7-French Version, p.135).
Note : This transformation transfers Ki into the Super Saiyan's body to allow the muscles to develop through nerve compression.

Translation:
Learning to control one's Ki
Ultimate techniques become more powerful as the volume of Ki (気の量) used increases. Through training that simulates real combat, the goal is to develop the total reserve of Ki (気の総量) while skillfully managing the constant fluctuations of Ki."
Son Gokū - Super Saiyan Full Power
A perfectly mastered physical state implies a good understanding of one's power. When an individual releases too much Ki all at once, it leads to a significant drop in Vital Energy and disrupts the balance of their bodily activity. As a result, they lose endurance, and sometimes speed, due to the effort required for each of their movements to maintain their usual pace. However, by managing the energy expenditure the body needs, they can freely adjust the power of their transformations instead of constantly deploying them at their maximum.
The term 'Furu Pawā' (フルパワー / 'Full Power') refers to the final evolution of a physical state at 100% of its capabilities. For example, the true potential of the Super Saiyan requires excellent mental control to eliminate the negative effects of the form (emotional and physical tension; limited stamina). By learning to conserve their Vital Energy at rest, the Super Saiyan can remain transformed without tiring. When releasing the maximum amount of Ki, they tap into all their resources at 'full power.'
Sometimes, an individual's full power is not naturally accessible to them. For example, Freeza was unable to control the maximum potential of his final form:
Son Gokū
Translation:
"Why unleash your full power (Furu Pawā, フルパワー) only now...? I understand. If you use all your strength, your own body won't be able to handle it."
Freeza needed time to concentrate all of his Ki and reach 100% of his power. But in return, this physical state caused his Vital Energy to drop at an astonishing rate.
KI ATTACKS:
Aura projection techniques are Ki Waves (Kikōha - 気功波, lit. 'Ki manipulation wave'). Their power thus relies on the user's stamina.
Chōzenshū-Vol.4
Translation: Kikōha (Energy wave, energy ball)
"Appearance: Chapter 176 / Category: Ki Manipulation / Characters: Vegeta, Trunks, Piccolo, Krilin, Androids No. 17 and No. 18, Raditz, Ginyū, Freeza, Cell, Majin Buu (Pure) and others / Description: This is a technique that involves materializing internal energy outside the body and projecting it. Many fighters appearing in Dragon Ball use this technique, including Gokū. The name varies depending on the character. In the story, it is mainly called 'energy wave' or 'energy ball,' but it is the same technique. Additionally, the size and power vary depending on the volume of Ki used. Regarding its form, it is known that there are 2 types: Light Beam type (光線), like the Kamehameha, and Light Sphere type (光球), like the Genkidama."

"Appearance: Chapter 14 / Category: Ki Manipulation / Characters: Kame Sennin, Son Gokū, Son Gohan, Yamcha, Jackie Chun, Kulilin, Son Gohan (grandfather), Tenshinhan, Cell, Majin Buu (Good - Evil - Pure) and others / Description: A Ki technique developed by Kame Sennin. It is a technique that concentrates Ki into a single point before releasing it. The power varies depending on the Ki strength (気の強さ) of the user, and with sufficient mastery, it becomes possible to control this power. Gokū quickly learned this technique, perhaps thanks to his training with his grandfather Son Gohan or his Saiyan traits. Similarly, Tenshinhan easily imitated it. This shows that once you know how to control your Ki, it is possible to use the Kamehameha."
There are individual techniques that require most of the fighter's Vital Energy to be released all at once. During a battle, their use can, in certain situations, reverse the balance of power:

Ki extraction abilities are techniques or artificial mechanisms that draw Vital Energy from biological beings to generate power at a single point.
ABSORPTION:
The absorption technique (吸収) collects the Vital Energy of an individual to increase the user's Ki.
- KYÛSHÛ - (absorption) : [Origin] Ability. [Characters] Cell, Buu. [Special Features] An ability that allows its wielder to assimilate anything they desire and incorporate it into their own strength. The first to use this power is Cell, during his initial stage of mutation. He drains all the inhabitants of Ginger Town of their Vital Energy to increase his power [...] Buu's assimilation, however, is entirely different from Cell's. While Cell only benefits from the strength of those he absorbs, Buu, on the other hand, also gains all the powers possessed by the absorbed individual (Daizenshū-Vol.7-French Version, p.125).
THE ENERGY ABSORBER:
The assimilable energy system (enerugī kyūshūshiki, エネルギー吸収式) is a feeding method that activates a category of artificial humans equipped with an absorption mechanism.
- ENERUGÎ KYÛSHÛ - (energy absorber) : [Origin] Ability. [Characters] C-19, C-20. [Special Features] Thanks to an absorbing mechanism located in the palms of their hands, these cyborgs can drain the Vital Energy of their opponents to fuel their own system. Energy-based attacks are also absorbed (Daizenshū-Vol.7-French Version, p.118).
GENKIDAMA:

Functioning of the Genkidama and the savior of Earth.
"The Genkidama, along with the Kamehameha, is one of the most well-known techniques in the DBZ series. It is a powerful technique that involves gathering and releasing the Vital Energy from plants, trees, humans, animals, objects, and the atmosphere. To participate in the creation of the Genkidama, one simply needs to open their Heart (心) to Gokū's call and raise their hands high in the sky, and that will be enough. While the hands are raised, the Vital Energy is absorbed and accumulated into the Genkidama. However, for ordinary humans who are not well-trained, even raising their hands for a brief moment can lead to a significant loss of Physical Strength (体力), which is why most people were reluctant to cooperate when Gokū asked for their help. Without the assistance of Satan, whose fame on Earth is immense, it would have been impossible to create such a gigantic Genkidama."
Akira Toriyama :
Translation:
"The term 'Genki (元気)' is well known, but when you're asked, 'Aren't you feeling well? (Genkide wa nai no ka?)', even if you have just one illness (Byōki, 病気), the answer isn't obvious. There are people who are healthy but lack a lot of Genki, and others who are sick but full of Genki. Moreover, even when people have the same level of power, for example when they are attacked by Demon King Piccolo, some can bravely face him while others tremble in fear and flee. Reflecting on this, we can understand that different varieties of 'Ki' are crucial in combat. In the world of Chinese martial arts, represented by Tai Chi Chuan, the training and control of 'Ki' are highly valued.
In the story of Dragon Ball, the wizard Babidi invented a machine capable of measuring and absorbing 'Ki', but with current science, it is impossible to measure the amount of 'Ki' or store it somewhere. However, sometimes we feel encouraged by someone and 'receive Genki or Yūki (courage)'. 'Ki' is something invisible but real."

THE FIRST NAMEK ON HEARTH:
God (Kami-sama)
A being who watched over the Earth.
"History: He was born as a Namekian from the Dragon Clan. His true name is unknown. Around Age 250, he fled the planet Namek and sought refuge on Earth due to cataclysms. After undergoing rigorous training as a martial artist, he became the pupil of the ancient God. By eliminating his Evil Side (悪の部分), he was able to attain the title of God of Earth. Since then, he watched over Earth as a God, but after merging with Piccolo in Age 767, he abandoned his role. Appearance: Chapter 164 / Description: Before Dende became God, he was the one in charge of Earth and the creator of the Dragon Balls on Earth. With a Kind Heart (温厚な心), he contributed to the training of Gokū and his friends, then introduced them to Enma in the Afterlife, making him a God to whom they owe much. Though he was a Namekian who came to Earth long ago, he had forgotten his own origins. Piccolo Daimaō is the manifestation of his Evil Heart (悪の心), which he had expelled during his training before becoming God. If Piccolo were to disappear, he would die as well, which is why he allowed this evil presence (悪の存在) to act as it pleased."

"Great Demon King Piccolo") is the evil twin of Kami-sama and belongs to a race of demons known as the 'Mazoku' (魔族 – transl. "demon clan"). His existence is the result of the negative influence the Earthlings had on him (p.52, Vol.17-DB Perfect Edition). In the Namekian language, "Piccolo" means "another world," granting him the title of "Great Demon King from another world."
Piccolo (Daimaô)
The embodiment of evil who plotted to conquer the world.
"History: He was sealed away for the first time by Mutaito, but later returned to life. After regaining his youth through a wish granted by the Dragon Balls, he set his plan for world domination into motion. Eventually, he was killed by Gokū, but just before dying, he left an egg in which he had implanted all his memories. / Appearance: Chapter 135 /

Evil Ki (Aku no Ki, 悪の気 or Jaakuna Ki - 邪悪な気 / lit. "malice; ill will; harmful gas; vengeful spirit; specter") refers to an incorporeal energy that haunts malevolent spirits.
During the 25th Tenkaichi Budōkai (天下一武道会, lit. "World Martial Arts Championship"), Son Gokū notices that Spopovitch emits no corporeal energy while fighting Videl. "It seems like his strength far exceeds his own abilities," he says (p.66 and 74, Vol.30-DB Perfect Edition). When Spopovitch's spirit is under Babidi's control, his body becomes capable of handling much more power than in his normal state.

To resurrect Majin Buu, Babidi needs to collect a massive amount of "pure and positive" energy (Zen no enerugī, 善のエネルギー) using the energy collector (Enerugī Kyūinki, エネルギー吸引機). This device is entrusted to the demonic wizard's subordinates. Its unit of measurement, the Kili (Kiri, キリ), takes into account both the Battle Power and the Vital Energy of a fighter.
Babidi's spaceship also allows him to absorb the positive energies of non-demonic warriors suffering physical damage within its confines. These energies are then transferred into Majin Buu's cocoon (封印の玉 - sealing sphere).

Dragon Ball Z Fact File N°39
Translation: WHAT IS THE DEMON REALM, DABURA'S LAND OF ORIGIN?
"The warrior Dabura, who acts alongside Babidi, is the King of the 'Demon and Darkness Realm (暗黒魔界).' Previously, Garlic Jr. and his companions, who attacked the Earth's Guardian, were called the Mazoku and were treated as a separate race in DRAGON BALL. The Mazoku are not classified as a race like the 'Saiyans.' Instead, they represent a state where the evil hidden within the heart is amplified to its extreme. Thus, when the Mazoku approached Earth, many people were transformed into demons, but they later returned to being normal humans. In contrast, the Demon and Darkness Realm exists in a world separate from that of humans. Incidentally, Akkuman, who appears as the fourth warrior of Fortuneteller Baba, also originates from the Demon Realm (魔界). He possesses a special technique called the 'Akumaito Beam,' which causes the Evil Heart (悪の心) of his opponent to swell."
